Scottish Clan Kilt Patterns

Scottish Tartan - Wearing another clans kilt?
Hello everyone, I am a Thompson, member of the McTavish clan. Born in Scotland but now I live in the U.S. and the kilt store in my area does not supply McTavish kilts. Was wondering if it would be so terrible to wear another clan's kilt as I'm planning to go to my schools prom in it. I'm hoping to atleast find a similar red and blue pattern.
Thanks
In the US it's probably OK to wear the tartan of another clan "just for looks." Most Americans can't identify what clan a tartan represents (except maybe Royal Stewart) just by looking at it anyway. ![]()
If you wish to "play it safe," if the local kilt store has kilts in the national tartan of Scotland, you may wish to go that route.
Here's a link to what the National Tartan of Scotland looks like:

Then there is a Scotland Forever Tartan:

I couldn't find any kilt etiquette sites quickly for more than just my personal opinion for you. But, since you are originally from Scotland, I suspect you are well-versed in the etiquette of tartans and kilts.
